DAY 1:

Arequipa to Chivay

Between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM transportation will collect passengers from various hotels to begin the journey to the Colca Canyon. The route follows the Yura road ascending towards the Chachani volcano and continuing into the Pampa Cañahuas within the Aguada Blanca and Salinas National Reserve. This area is known for its population of vicunas a South American camelid. The Tocra wetlands offer opportunities to observe migratory birds including flamingos. The route passes the Chucura extinct volcano crater. A stop is made at the Volcanoes viewpoint the highest point on the route at 4800 meters (15748 feet) above sea level offering views of the western mountain range.

Arrival in Chivay is scheduled between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM. Hotel check-in is followed by lunch which is not included in the tour package. At 5:00 PM the tour visits the La Calera hot springs where thermal waters range from 35 to 38 degrees Celsius. Dinner at 8:00 PM features a folkloric show also not included in the package. Overnight stay in Chivay.

Breakfast is served at 6:00 AM. At 6:30 AM the tour proceeds to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint a location for observing the Colca Canyon and condor flights. The return journey includes stops at the towns of Pinchollo Maca and Yanque each with colonial churches and viewpoints such as Choquetico and Antahuilque. These locations provide views of the valley’s terraces pre-Inca tombs and models. Lunch is not included.

The return to Arequipa begins at 1:00 PM with arrival estimated between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Travelers should be aware that high altitude conditions can affect individuals differently. It is advisable to acclimate before engaging in strenuous activities. “We were totally beat” by the end of the second day. “The bus ride was a bit of a grind” with the winding roads. “Honestly the views were totally worth it” even though the early start was “a bit of a drag”. “We where told that this tour was a must do” and it really was.

Gear Checklist – What to Pack?

  • Light backpack – keep it manageable
  • Hat – sun protection, you know the drill
  • Sunglasses – gotta shield those eyes
  • Sunscreen – for real, the sun is strong up here
  • Insect repellent – those little biters
  • Flashlight/headtorch – essential for the early morning trek out of the canyon (5 AM start, pre-sunrise = dark!)
  • Trekking shoes or boots – comfy and sturdy is key
  • Warm layers, sweater or jacket – temps can drop to -10 Celsius (that’s 14 Fahrenheit!)
  • Shorts or pants for walking – whatever you’re comfy hiking in
  • Swimming suit, sandals, towel – for the oasis pools and hot springs
  • Toilet paper – always good to have some on hand
  • Towel – quick-dry one is best
  • Bottled water 2.5 liters – stay hydrated! (you can buy more in villages, but it’ll cost ya)
  • Snacks – fuel for that morning climb! Breakfast on the last day is after the hike, remember.
  • Hiking sticks – optional, but some folks swear by ‘em
  • Cash – for souvenirs, extra drinks, optional lunch, hot springs, mule rental, emergencies, you name it.
